The major challenge faced when designing the IKON LED uplighter was that it was the only luminaire in these circulation areas providing the main light source. By design an uplighter is an inefficient method to illuminate a space as it is used to project light upwards onto the ceiling and relies on the reflected light off the ceiling to illuminate the space. Therefore, to achieve the required lux levels on the ground, the TOTEM signs (which were mounted in large spacing’s typically ranging from 7M to 9M) required a massive amount of light output offering just over 58,000 lumens – which is the equivalent of circa 100 typical small down lights combined in this one fixture. Conventionally an LED is downward facing with a heatsink on top, as heat ordinarily rises and therefore the heat management is relatively straightforward. As the IKON luminaire is an uplighter we had to develop a bespoke heat sink that would draw down the heat from the LED, reversing the conventional scenario above. The design of the heatsink became paramount and many tests and changes occurred until we eventually developed a heatsink capable of dissipating the excess heat whilst upholding the architect’s initial design.

Good article. More autopsies needed. None of my 15Khr+ projected LED have made it. About half have had LED failure and the other half driver failure. Surprisingly to me only a couple due to electrolytic death. Thats on the 120VAC current. Ones designed for 12-48VDC arena tend more towards LED failure roughly 75%. Which really isnt saying much due to their simplistic driving Often a resistor and maybe a zener.. 10% due to mechanical stress and poor manufacture/design. Then there’s the cheapos (120VAC) from Wallys that have so far not lasted 2Kh and all but one have been LED failure. The one excluded having been term!inated by 40KW genny and overzealous newbie *crunchy.

The color temperature does not directly tell you how the light will appear. That depends on the overall brightness of the light.

Why don’t you just use POE lighting. Need a POE network switch and standard Ethernet cable. Ubiquity has some panels and I know Williams Lighting has a few different Luminaires. Circuits are generally limited to under 100 watts, that’s more due to the limitations on data cable.

All else being equal, more non-redundant parts in the critical failure path always results in lower reliability. If you want better reliability use better parts and/or add redundancy.

With tunnel projects, initial cost vs. whole life cost payback is always a primary concern. Whole life cost pack analyses typically consider all the following: initial cost; expected lifetime; expected maintenance/operating costs; and energy savings, among other considerations. These tunnel projects must have a positive cashflow in the end, and, must take full advantage of kWh energy savings from an LED replacement to justify using a higher-end product. This is where a robust tunnel luminaire, devoid of significant LED driver failures (the first, most common failure point in LED luminaires to date), and a solid customized controls solution become paramount; but again, the initial cost for the system must stay within reason.
