“I've tried several head torches over the years but I didn't realise the importance of having the right one until I was on a hike in Snowdonia. After starting in the early hours of the morning, in June, the sun gave us enough light to tackle the first mountains but by the end of the hike, at around 11pm, the sun disappeared – plunging us into pitch black. I had the toughest few hours hiking in the dark until around 3.30 am when thankfully the sun came back up.

Ross Wolfinger hanged himself in his segregation cell at Fountain prison on Aug. 22, 2018. This came less than a month after cutting his wrist and being placed on acute suicide watch. The night of his suicide, the correctional officer assigned to conduct security checks not only failed to do a single check, the order states, but put false information in his duty log indicated he had carried them out. Again, there was no intervention for about eight minutes to cut Wolfinger down and attempt first aid.

I have had very bad experiences with a particular brand of 100W LED bulb (I’ve had about 12 failures in 15 installations, some installations more than once). I’ve given up on 100W LED bulbs, which is too bad because they could save the most money. I may wind up replacing these with more and smaller LED bulbs.

The two longer-lived bulbs use twice as many packages to carry approximately the same number of LED dice as the GE Basic lamp, decreasing thermal resistance to their respective heatsinks, and presumably reducing their temperature. These bulbs also both mount the failure-prone driver electronics on separate PCBs from the LEDs to keep them cool. Finally, the 25,000-hour Cree bulb uses an electrolytic capacitor rated for 130 °C as opposed to the 105 °C caps in the other two. For similar operating temperatures, this could multiply the expected life of the capacitor by a factor of five. Each of these measures probably contributes to delaying catastrophic failure of the bulb, resulting in the longer rated lifetimes.

Ironically, today, with standardized CRI, color temperature, and power ratings, the effect is the same: incandecent lightbulb lifespan is the same between all manufacturers without a cartel being in place. The government eventually did the same job because it made sense to compromise on the lifespan of the bulb to achieve these other good qualities.

CRI can be a good indication, though it doesn’t tell the whole story, since it’s a one dimensional score that can be lowered by different effects.

The quality of the lighting matters too. When buying light bulbs, you want to look for two key indicators. The first is the correlated color temperature, or CCT, which tells you how warm the light appears. It is measured on the Kelvin scale and denotes the temperature required for a black object (think charcoal) to emit a certain color. You know how the hottest part of the flame is the blue part at the bottom, and the orangey-yellow part toward the top is cooler? It's the same with CCT. The higher the Kelvin, the bluer or whiter the light.

Europe been the second largest LED lighting market, and is further expected to hold its position throughout the forecast period. Stringent government policies regarding bans of inefficient lighting and lowering down the energy consumption, are anticipated to back the industry requirement in the region, over the forecast period.
