If you want efficiency, you’d rather replace the standard 48″ tubes with standard 48″ tubes with an electronic ballast. They beat most LED products on the market on luminous efficacy (lm/W), except colored LEDs and some poor quality white LEDs that are actually light blue.

All in all, I am delighted with both Cree products, unlike the Philips PAR38 bulb I bought years ago that turns itself off when I use my paper shredder. Perhaps the Philips engineers should have called my pals at the Linear Technology part of Analog Devices. The LT apps folks would have ensured there was no conducted EMI (electromagnetic interference) before the product shipped.

I’ve taken a look at some of the technical issues in LED lighting. Of course, there is more to LED bulbs than lifetime — color temperature and color rendering index (CRI) should factor into any purchase decision. How helpful any work light depends completely on its ability to give you enough light where and when you need it. If you’re considering it based on its size, the Milwaukee 2360 has plenty of output. When it comes to getting the light where you need it, it’s not quite as versatile as something like the M12 Rover, but you still have options.

Meanwhile Antonio Citterio has designed a pipe-like outdoor LED lighting system called Walkstick made from painted aluminium, and Piero Lissoni has contributed two minimalistic indoor track lighting designs called Atom and Diversion.

The throw is roughly 90°, which isn’t super wide for this class of light. However, the tighter throw means you are getting more light on the area you need to work in. And at 3,000 lumens, you can put it a reasonable distance from you to cover a wider area.

To replicate this effect indoors, place shaded or frosted-glass table lamps at eye level. Or consider a torchere, which is a floor lamp that shines light up at the ceiling the way the sun shines its light up as it dips into the horizon.

Another reason why I ultimately chose the BioLite over the Actik is that Petzl’s product weighs 92g, so it’s slightly heavier. It feels clunky, bulky and old-fashioned in comparison, and has a cold, hard plastic feel which is a bit front heavy. You can easily swivel it up and down to adjust where the beam is pointing, but it makes a loud creaky noise (not ideal for stealth). That said, the three settings are easy to navigate via a nicely large button above the LED lights, which makes life easy (especially if you’re in a panic, or you’ve had a few drinks).

The main lighting on the station concourses will come from Future Designs’ Ikon uplighter luminaires, mounted on top of wayfinding ‘totems’ within Tottenham Court Road, Farringdon, Liverpool Street, Bond Street and Whitechapel stations. Instead of pointing down in to the passenger area, these powerful upward-facing lights will shine onto the ceilings which will reflect the light back into the passenger space.
